An ancient Chinese herbal medicine found in wormwood could help fight TB

New research shows the compound, Artemisine, from a form of wormwood called Artemisia annua, could also help control the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Microbiologist Robert Abramovitch and his team at Michigan State University have found that artemisinin is capable of blocking a defensive mechanism used by the TB-causing bacterium, Mycobaterium tuberculosis (Mtb) that makes it highly tolerant to antibiotics. Artemisinin could shorten the treatment window and cure TB much quicker than before.
